XR3i Engine: Four-cylinder, in-line, cast iron block,
aluminium-alloy cylinder head.
Five main bearings.
Single overhead camshaft driven by toothed belt.
Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection.
1,596cc, bore 79.96mm, stroke
79.52mm. Compression ratio 9.5:1 96bhp (DIN) at 6,000rpm.
98lb/ft torque at 4,000rpm
RS 2000 At the time other Mk5 Escort were still using CVH engines because the new Zetec 16 valve engines were not introduced until 1992. Instead of using CVH , Ford chose the 'I4' 8 valve DOHC engine used in the Sierra and Scorpio as the base for the RS2000 engine. Fitted with a new Ford developed 16 valve head this engine produced 150hp. As opposite to other Ford overhead cam engines, this engine used chain driven camshafts. Tubular exhaust manifold was quite good design when compared to usual Ford cast iron manifolds. - DOHC 16v, iron block, alloy cylinder head.
- Bore and stroke 86,00 x 86,00 mm , 1998 cc, compression ratio 10,3:1.
- Electronic fuel injection, Ford EEC IV engine management system.
- Max power 150 hp at 6000 rpm, max torque 190 Nm at 4500 rpm.
RS turboThe engine fitted to the RS Turbois a 1600 CVH unit modified to suit the higher loads and the application of theturbocharger. Computerised fuel injection and engine management incorporatingturbocharger boost control is also fitted.
The turbocharger increases theengines performance in the lower engine speed ranges which are primarily usedunder normal driving and therefore provides a very usable increase in power andtorque.

Mahle forged pistons and heat-treated steel crankshaft and conrods.
Garrett AiResearch T03/04B (replaced by a T02/03 B unit after 1994) oil lubricated, water cooled turbo (0.8 bar max. pressure / 1.2 bar in overboost mode).
2 OHC belt driven and hydraulic tappets. 4 valves per cylinder (V layout @45°).
Sodium filled exhaust valves. Compression ratio 8:1. Weber-Marelli IAW P8 integral engine management (injection and ignition), with 3D cartography (replaced by a Ford EEC IV unit after 1994). Water to oil heat exchange.
Behr two stage water/air and air/air intercooler (replaced by a simple air/air unit past 1994).
Max power:
220 Bhp @ 6250 rpm (227 Bhp @5750 after 1994),
290 N/m @ 3500rpm (@2500rpm after 1994)
